As the year comes to an end, there is no doubt that 2018 has been a challenging time for MIA and the clients we serve. We have had amazing victories, devastating setbacks, and countless surprises, and we look forward to continuing the fight in 2019 for our clients and their families.
MIA is also thrilled to announce two new team members, each of whom brings fresh energy and extensive experience to our work. Lissette Zavala, with more than 15 years of experience as as immigration paralegal, is MIA’s first Nashville-based legal assistant. Kind and compassionate, Ms. Zavala will focus her work on detained unaccompanied minors in the Nashville area, providing essential “know your rights” information to the children and assisting in their deportation defense with Staff Attorney Caroline Burriss.
Shelley R. Johnson, a recent graduate of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, has joined MIA as a law clerk. Ms. Johnson has an extensive background with humanitarian-based immigration law, having worked at various nonprofits near the Texas-Mexico border as a case manager and legal assistant for several years prior to law school. Ms. Johnson is based in Memphis, but she will also be assisting with the detained children in Nashville as well as working on MIA’s current projects, including the Children’s Project, the Survivors’ Project, and the Immigrants’ Rights Project.
MIA looks forward to working with Ms. Zavala and Ms. Johnson in 2019 (and beyond!) to help immigrant families lead safe and secure lives here in the Mid-South.
